The law in Italy

The law in Italy about airguns is not simple to be read. So we're not going to do a "copy & paste" of the law articles, but we'll try to describe with simple words what it's all about.

FREE PURCHASING
Air guns such air carbines and CO2 pistols and rifles with energy below 7.5 joule are freely sold by gun shops and they are commonly called "reduced wounding capability weapons". You may identify these weapons because they have a permanent mark that's saying <7.5 or they display an "F" within a pentagon shape (It means "Frei". Free, in German language) and they have well displayed a number called CN (Conformity Number) that is indexed in the Ministry of Interior and univocally identify the weapon. This kind of weapons can be purchased by people over 18, by displaying an Identity Card or passport.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN "CONCEALED WEAPON" AND "WEAPON TRANSPORTATION"
To carry a weapon you usually need a special permit, similar to the "concealed weapon license" (also called FAC in UK). This is not really required if you have to transport or use an airgun with energy below 7.5 joule, but there are particular rules that you have to strictly follow up, according to the Italian law.
It is not "transportation", but "concealed weapon", if you are carrying a weapon in the holster or you are wearing it anyway, or if you are carrying a weapon in the car, motorbike, by walk, and the gun is loaded and ready to use.
It is "transportation" when the gun is safely locked within his bag, it is unloaded and the ammunitions are not immediately available to be loaded in the gun. Or rather the gun is kept in the back of your car and the ammunitions are kept inside the passenger area or they are also located in the back of your car, but they are well locked with key in a different box.
An unloaded weapon locked in his bag can be freely transported with car, motorbike, by walk and even using public transport vehicles and by boat.
You might have some problem to transport your weapon in airplanes but you can priory agree with the airline to arrange its transportation as well.

USE OF REDUCED WOUNDING CAPABILITY WEAPONS
You can freely use your airgun below 7.5 joule energy, within your home, in private areas bounded with fence (however it has to be "safe") and within the TSN (National Federal Shooting Ranges). A private area is safe when:

  1. There is no possibility for people to pass between the shooter and the target.
  2. Behind the target there is a wall or at least 300 meters of open space.
  3. There is no possibility that the pellet can catch anybody bouncing from the target.
  4. There is no possibility that the pellet can catch anybody if you miss the target.

Theoretically the conditions are safe also if you shoot at the target in open fields, where the seeing is free and greater than 300 meters (this is the distance considered "safe" for an airgun) to any direction, so that you can see and to be seen before to enter the weapon range. But our Italian law is not very clear about this opportunity, and you may be charged for "illegal hunting" or unauthorized carrying of weapon. Because of this, and to avoid to need a lawyer to claim your rights, we disencourage you to try to shoot in public open fields.

USE OF WEAPONS FOR YOUNGSTER BELOW 18
Use of weapons is allowed to young people below 18, but over 10, under strict supervision of an adult.
Even in the TSN you can start your sport career after 10 y.o. but always under a supervision of an adult that's responsible for you.
Unfortunately there has been some incidents, even recently, where a young boy seriously wounded himself with an airgun.
We have to keep well in mind that 7.5 joule energy, applied to a pellet of 4.5 millimeters ... BORES!
